Subscribe to REMC Ramblings

This may turn out to be a rather lengthy post, but it’s time you knew how to subscribe to REMC Ramblings via RSS…what is RSS? Basically RSS brings the content of a web site to you, rather than you having to go out and get it (that’s what you do now). Why do you care? Because it will save you time and effort…instead of browsing around to the sites you like, you can have any new information come to you automatically.

OK, so here we go…

Step 1: Go to Bloglines and set up an account. It’s free and easy…no instructions needed. Bloglines is the news aggregator that will collect the information from various sites that you choose.

Step 2: Find a site that has an RSS or Atom feed. Don’t know what to look for? Let’s try this one. Do you see the orange button labeled XML near the top? That means this site has an RSS feed. Click on that button to see the xml web page. Your browser should be displaying a new page that looks pretty geeky with xml code and other yucky items. But look at the web address at the top…in our example that address is http://www.weblogg-ed.com/xml/rss.xml. This is what you need to copy and paste into your Bloglines account.

  • Right click on the web address.
  • Left click on Copy.

Step 3: Now return to Bloglines…click the My Feeds button up on the left. You don’t have any feeds…well maybe the official Bloglines feed…but you want to add something better. Click the Add link which is just below My Feeds.

You shoud see a page that will allow you to add a web address (URL).

  • Right click in the text field..
  • Left click on Paste…the URL should show up. If it doesn’t then go back and copy the URL again.
  • Click the Subscribe button.

You’re done! That wasn’t too bad, now was it? Your new feed will show up on the left-hand side. If it’s bold, it means you havn’t read it yet…a lot like many email progams. If you have questions or problems let me know.
