NECC Blogging Session 3

Instant Messaging Makes it Real: Social Glue for Online Learning

Debby Kilburn, Cerro Coso Community College

Well, part of the point of blogging during these sessions is that each entry should be up online when the session is over. Unfortunately the reality is that I can’t get connected. Actually I can connect, but can’t get past the conference center’s front page.

The focus of this session is more student-to-student IMing than teacher-to-student communication. It takes some effort by the teacher to make online students feel connected…it’s easy for them to drop out. But learning works well when students learn in groups.

What I was hoping was that they were going to talk about K12 students using IM to collaborate etc. Instead what they were focusing on was how grad students use IM in online classes to “come together” as a community and feel as though they were part of the group.

I ducked out a little early and got some lunch at the Hard Rock Café.
