Social Networking Sites

I attended a meeting today in one of our districts…they were beginning to address the issues of social networking sites like MySpace and Xanga and what they could do to help students and parents become aware of potential problems. This in light of some trouble that other districts have had with students posting incriminating photos of themselves online.

Locally these types of sites are filtered at school…really what educational use do they serve? But at home it’s open season. We should be careful not to pick on these sites, however, because there are thousands of sites that are inappropriate, not just these.

It boils down to parental supervision at home and paying attention to what your own children are doing in front of that computer. Simple interest and conversation with children can solve a lot of problems. It obviously won’t do any good to forbid students to visit these sites, they simply need to be aware of the potential hazards.
