Michigan Online Learning Experiences

Now that the school year has all but begun, it’s time for me to get myself in gear on REMC Ramblings. First topic is the new draft of what the state of Michigan is meaning by the term “Online Learning Experience.” Why does anyone care? Michigan has adopted new high school graduation requirements which, besides a beefed-up core curriculum, mandates that students will participate in an online learning experience before they graduate.

The Michigan Merit Curriculum guidelines
for online learning require that students:

  • Take an online course, or
  • Participate in an online experience, or
  • Participate in online experiences incorporated
    into each course.

From my perspective, I’m not sure what the difference is between the first and second items. It seems to me that if students are going to participate then they’d be participating within the context of a course they’re taking. Maybe I’m missing something.

In any case, take a look at the draft guidelines and make comments in order to make it better. To view and comment on the draft online learning guidelines click here.
