Internet safety resources

This week’s theme is Internet Safety. Educators can take two paths…it’s kind of like talking about sex with your children. Either you can tell them what they should know…or they can learn about it “on the streets.” Use these resources to inform your students.

  • The NetSmartz Workshop is an interactive, educational safety resource to teach kids and teens how to stay safer on the Internet. they have videos, audio, activities etc. to help you…these are also great parent resources.
  • i-SAFE is probably the most popular resource for Internet safety topics. They offer an entire curriculum of activities and resources for parents, teachers and students.
  • Web Wise Kids is an online safety organization which publishes computer simulations with an online safety theme. They also have good safety tips for parents.
  • Let your parents know that they can use Naomi at home to filter web pages. Naomi is free!
  • Another tool they can use is Key Logger, which records every keystroke made on the computer. Everything typed can be retrieved and read.
  • Imbee is a new site that allows teachers to set up safe, social networking spaces for their students. It’s similar to something like MySpace, but invitation only and administered by the teacher. Imbee includes lesson plans and activities.
